Given 174 stocks rising versus 134 others ending lower, the main index rose 7.74 points, or 0.77%, at 1,011.86. Market revenue reduced compared to last Friday as selling pressure subsided, with volume and value shedding 7.8% and 17.5% at 230.5 million shares worth VND5.3 trillion, respectively.
The put-through market turned active with nearly 42.2 million shares valued at VND1.1 trillion changing hands. Notably, consumer goods producer MSN reported 3.7 million shares traded in block deals with the total value of over VND327 billion.
The rally was led by lender VCB, which gained 2.4% at VND67,600 after a steep fall last Friday. Meanwhile, TCB added 0.7% at VND27,050 and VPB gained 3.2% at VND22,500.
Among oil and gas stocks, GAS jumped 2.4% at VND104,000 and PLX closed the day up slightly 0.2% at VND62,500. PVD, a drilling enterprise, also increased 1.1% at VND18,850.
In contrast, brewery firm SAB was the most noticeable laggard for plunging 3.4% to the intraday low of VND245,100. Steel maker HPG fell 0.2% at VND31,850, extending its losing streak to the third straight session, although it was the volume leader on the southern market with 10.5 million shares traded.
Securities expert Nguyen Huu Binh told tinnhanhchungkhoan.vn that the market would make its next step forward on the back of bank stocks. At the current price levels, bank stocks have room to advance.
In an optimistic scenario, the VN-Index may move up to between 1,025 points and 1,040 points in the coming time. Technical indicators also support the market trend, but it is not easy to reach the new goals, Binh said.
However, some analysts and securities firms have warned of a possible downturn as local stocks have gained strongly, encouraging some investors to lock in their profits.
On the Hanoi Stock Exchange, the HNX-Index rose 0.4% at 110.88, marking the sixth consecutive winning session. Trading volume on the northern bourse fell 3.4% to 48.2 million shares but value improved 7.9% at VND692 billion.
Lender SHB was the most actively traded stock with 4.3 million shares exchanged but it moved flat at VND8,000. Its fellow bank ACB rose 0.6% at VND31,900 on matching volume of 3.7 million shares.
