VISTA collected and reviewed data issued by multiple international tourism agencies, noting that local tourists have gradually shifted their interest from popular destinations in China and ASEAN countries to other countries and regions farther afield including Japan, South Korea and Taiwan.
They also visited far-away destinations in North America and Western Europe.
South Korea, Japan and Taiwan, as a result, have issued many preferential policies and launched tourism products especially designed for Vietnamese tourists, given the high volume of Vietnamese travelers and their willingness to spend lots of money on outbound tours and services.
Over the years, Vietnam has advanced to become a source tourism market for South Korea, with the growth rate in the number of local tourists visiting South Korea remaining the highest among other countries. South Korea saw an annual increase of between 30% and 40% in the number of Vietnamese tourist arrivals during the 2016-2018 period, and last year alone, it welcomed some 450,000 Vietnamese tourists.
As for Japan, more than 380,000 Vietnamese traveled to the country last year, rising 26% year-on-year.
The robust growth of outbound tours has attracted the participation of multiple local firms, said VISTA Chairman Vu The Binh. Up to 70% of over 2,000 international travel firms in Vietnam operate outbound tours, he stated.
The upward trend in the number of local people traveling overseas is expected to continue in the coming period, Binh added.
The VISTA chairman noted that the country should establish an organization specializing in managing and monitoring outbound tour operators, as well as encouraging Vietnamese to adopt proper etiquette when traveling overseas, aiming to protect the interests of travel agencies and tourists and maintain the prestige of local tourists.
