The benchmark VN Index lost 0.48 point, or 0.12% to end at 379.14, lowest level since May, 2009. Volume fell 38.3% to 21.2 million shares worth VND326.7 billion including 2.8 million shares worth VND50.79 billion changed hands in the put-through deals.
VN Index opened in the green with 0.72 million shares traded. However, selling pressure lingered to defeat any attempts to raise the market prices. Trading was sluggish as both sellers and buyers did not try any big move amid lack of market driving news.
On the macro front, Ho Chi Minh city’s November CPI came out at 0.28% on month, 16.88% on year while Hanoi posted CPI increase of 0.29% on month and 18.49% on year.
Outstanding non-production loans in Ho Chi Minh City (HCMC), as of end-October, 2011 stayed at 18.57% of total loans with 10 out of 16 commercial banks in the local community facing high proportion of non-production loans, the State Bank of Vietnam’s data showed.
Back to the market, the breadth was negative, among 305 listed firms on HOSE, losers outweighed gainers by 147-81 and 46 stocks unchanged and the rest untraded. As many as 21 stocks hit ceiling while 59 issues fell to the floor, 5% each side.
Among top 10 market caps, 4 rose (STB, VNM, VPL, EIB), 6fell (BVH, HAG, VCB, CTG, VIC, MSN)
Property shares still led the market decline. HAG, VIC, DIC, ITA, ITC, KBC, NTL were losers though SJS and DIG soared.
Banks shares, however, were stronger than the market with STB, MBB, EIB on the rise but VCB and CTG closing lower. The bulls slowly but firmly boosted up STB, MBB shares prices during the day. Trading of these shares showed that the selling pressure was not very high and the key driver now is money flows. Steady money flows entering these two bank shares sent the prices firmly higher.
On the Hanoi Stock Exchange, the HNX closed down today, losing 0.5 point or 0.8% to 61.68. Trading volume fell 27.5% to 18.2 million shares traded for VND162.7 billion of which 1.9 million shares worth VND16.47 billion were changed hands in put-through deals.
Market breadth was negative with 69 gainers, 151 losers and 57 flat issues and 116 untraded. Among top 10 market caps, 2 gained 4 lost and 4 unchanged.
High liquid and speculative shares KLS, VND stayed unchanged while PVX, VCG were losers. Trading of these stocks showed that some narrow range-bound trading is likely for now.
VNDIRECT Securities Corporation (VND) was the most active stock with 1.9 million shares changed hands, closing flat at VND9,600.
Kim Long Securities JSC (KLS) came second with 1.3 million shares traded, closing flat VND9,700 on average.
PetroVietnam Power Land Joint Stock Company (PVX) ranked third in the list with 1.3 million shares traded, closing down 1.1% to VND9,000 on average.
