The benchmark VN Index lost 7.9 points, or 2.26% to end at 340.94. Volume fell 18.93% to 20.6 million shares worth VND304.4 billion, including 3.4 million shares worth of VND78.6 billion changed hands in the put-through deals.
VN Index opened in the red with 0.8 million shares traded .Trading was sluggish, buyers were very cautious making seller lose temper, accepting lower prices. Market went deeper into the negative ground as it progressed and closed at the low of the day.
Market breadth was broadly negative. Among 307 listed firms on HOSE, losers outweighed gainers by 149-60 and 70 stocks unchanged and the rest untraded. As many as 27 stocks closed at the ceiling price and 48 fell to the floor.
Property shares were weak , NTL fell to the floor from early trade, at the close, ITA, ITC, SJS were all losers.
Securities and bank shares also suffered, CTG could not extend the rally though foreign and CTG, VCB, SSI were loser.
Refrigeration Electrical Engineering Corporation (REE) showed its solid performance after the news of booking VND250 billion profit from closing position in Saigon Thuong Tin Commercial Joint Stock Bank or Sacombank (STB) and the chairman to buy 2.2 million shares in the company.
Saigon Thuong Tin Commercial Joint Stock Bank or Sacombank (STB) was the most active stock today, falling from 52 week high to close at VND15,800, losing 1.25% with 1.8 million shares traded.
Japan Vietnam Medical Instrument JSC. (JVC) ranked second with 1.1 million shares traded, closing down 7.3% to VND16,600 as today was the ex-date of 2011 interim cash dividend at VND2,000/share.
Saigon Securities Inc. (SSI) was in the third place with 0.8 million shares traded, closing down 1.5% to VND13,100.
PetroVietnam Transportation Corporation (PVT) ranked forth with 0.9 million shares traded, closing at the ceiling of VND3,400. PetroVietnam Transportation Corporation (PVT) was the spot light in the market and its share prices hit ceiling for second day after posting solid profit in 2011.
Tu Liem Urban Development JSC. (NTL) was in the fifth place with 0.6 million shares traded, closing down 4.8% to VND12,000.
On the Hanoi Stock Exchange, the HNX closed down 0.54 point or 0.96% to 55.89. Trading volume rose 3.9% to 19.9 million shares traded for VND181.6 billion of which 3.9 million shares worth VND65.4 billion were changed hands in put-through deals.
Market breadth was negative with 56 gainers, 149 losers and 188 flat issues.
VNDIRECT Securities Corporation (VND) was the most active stock with 1.9 million shares changed hands, closing down 4.4% to VND6,500 on average.
Kim Long Securities JSC (KLS) ranked second in the list with 1.7 million shares traded, closing down 2.6% to VND7,500 on average.
PetroVietnam Construction Joint Stock Corporation (PVX) came third with 1.1 million shares traded, closing down 3% to VND6,500 on average.
