The benchmark VN Index gained 3.03 points, or 0.79% to end at 387.97- the highest level since December 7, 2011.
The index has risen by 10.4% in January 2012, paring the loss of 27.5% in 2011.
Trading volume soared by 80% from yesterday to 39.04 million shares worth VND508.7 billion.
Market breadth was positive today. Among 306 listed firms on HOSE, gainers outweighed losers by 149-99 and 58 stocks unchanged and the rest untraded. As many as 56 stocks closed at the ceiling prices.
Eximbank (EIB) was the most active stock today with 2.64 million shares traded, closing up 2.07% to VND14,800.
Saigon Securities Inc (SSI), ranked second with 1.8 million shares traded, edged up 0.67% to VND15,100.
Hoang Anh Gia Lai (HAG) came third with 1.3 million units traded, soared by 4.83% to settle at VND21,700.
VSG led the upswing with a 6.67% rally, closing at VND1,600 (in excess of the daily limit of 5% because of tick-size price ruling). SPM was the biggest normal loser, giving up 4.91% to end at VND42,600.
On the Hanoi Stock Exchange, the HNX closed up 1.25 points or 2.11% to 60.59. Trading volume doubled from a day earlier to 38.65 million shares for VND322.29 billion.
Market breadth was positive with 202 gainers, 55 losers, 50 closed unmoved, and 86 were untraded.
PetroVietnam Construction (PVX), was the most active stock today with 3.93 million shares changed hands, closing up 5.63% to VND7,500 on average.
Kim Long Securities (KLS), ranked second with 3.55 million units traded, advanced by 4.5% to VND9,300 per share.
VNDirect Securities (VND) were in the third place with 3.3 million shares traded, gained 4.3% to VND7,300.
