The benchmark VN Index jumped 11.94 points, or 3.2% to end at 384.94. Volume fell 27.1% to 21.6 million shares worth VND296.1 billion, including 3.1 million shares worth of VND33.8 billion changed hands in the put-through deals.
VN Index opened in the green with 0.7 million shares traded .Trading was slow as typical for the first trading session of the new year. However, buying energy into blue chips inspired interest of the whole market and stock prices went higher as market progressed. Many more shares hit the ceiling at the close, putting the index to end at the high of the day.
Heavy weighs, blue chips, pennies were all higher.
Market breadth was broadly positive. Among 306 listed firms on HOSE, gainers outweighed losers by 208-30 and 41 stocks unchanged and the rest untraded. As many as 97 stocks closed at the ceiling price and 16 fell to the floor.
Saigon Securities Inc. (SSI) was the most active stock today, with 1.8 million shares traded, closing up 4.9% to VND15,000.
Saigon Thuong Tin Commercial Joint Stock Bank or Sacombank (STB) ranked second with 1.2 million shares traded, closing up 2.8% to VND18,500.
Japan Vietnam Medical Instrument JSC. (JVC) was in the third place with 0.9 million shares traded, closing up 2.8% to VND18,300.
Joint Stock Commercial Bank for Foreign Trade of Vietnam or Vietcombank (VCB) ranked forth with 0.8 million shares traded, closing up 4.8% to VND24,200.
Refrigeration Electrical Engineering Corporation (REE) was in the fifth place with 0.7 million shares traded, closing up 4.9% to VND12,800.
On the Hanoi Stock Exchange, the HNX closed up 0.9 point or 1.54% to 59.34. Trading volume fell 23% to 19.3 million shares traded for VND156.5 billion of which 1.8 million shares worth VND31.4 billion were changed hands in put-through deals.
Market breadth was positive with 151 gainers, 61 losers and 65 flat issues and 116 untraded.
VNDIRECT Securities Corporation (VND) was the most active stock with 2.6 million shares changed hands, closing up 1.5% to VND7,000 on average.
Kim Long Securities JSC (KLS) ranked second in the list with 1.7 million shares traded, closing up 1.1% to VND8,900 on average.
PetroVietnam Construction Joint Stock Corporation (PVX) came third with 1.5 million shares traded, closing flat at VND7,100 on average.
