Notably, the prices of Tet goods are forecast to remain stable, Nguyen Huynh Trang, deputy director of the city’s Department of Industry and Trade, told a meeting on year-end price stabilization held on December 24 in HCMC.
The total value of products stocked up for the Tet season is over VND18 trillion, or roughly US$765 million, an increase of more than VND600 billion against last year. Of these, goods enlisted in the city’s price stabilization program make up over VND7 trillion, Trang said at the meeting with the municipal government and the Ministry of Industry and Trade.
During the shopping spree between January 6 and February 4, the total value of goods for Tet in the city is expected to amount to over VND10 trillion, including more than VND4 trillion of items whose prices are kept stable.
The volume of goods this year increased some 16% compared with assigned figures, with many product groups making up the majority, such as eggs and poultry meat, processed foods, cattle meat, rice, and edible oil.
The municipal department had earlier worked with suppliers in the provinces of Dong Nai, Binh Duong, Ben Tre, and Dong Thap to ensure a very large volume of goods is available in the city for Tet.
In addition, enterprises joining the price stabilization program pledged to keep prices of goods stable during the two months before and after Tet, as well as offer large discounts to consumers who purchase essential items, such as pork, chicken and eggs within the two days prior to Tet.
The participating firms will also run promotional programs, mainly for drinks, jams, cakes and clothing, to encourage consumption among local consumers, noted Trang.
At the event, representatives of major retailers in the city, such as Satra, Vissan, and Saigon Co.op, said that they have stocked up on a wide variety of goods for Tet, which increased by 10-20% versus the year-ago period, thus there are no concerns about shortages of goods or overpriced items.
Local residents can purchase a wide selection of goods for Tet, as many more regional specialties will be made available across supermarkets, convenience stores and retail outlets, offering reasonable prices and high quality. Meanwhile, enterprises and suppliers will have more opportunities to expand their supply network.
