The benchmark VN Index lost 9.48 points, or 2.34% to end at 395.54. This is the biggest fall since September 19, 2011.
Volume fell to 34.55 million shares worth VND679.33 billion compared with 49.9 million shares worth VND704.57 billion on last Friday trading.
VN Index opened in the red with 1.48 million shares traded .Selling pressure rose as traders decided to take profit after recent hefty rally, sending the market down further in the continuous trading session. At the close, 92 stocks closed at the floor today.
Newly introduced VN30 lost 12 points or 2.62% to 446.23 today. Volume dropped to 13.17 million worth of VND237.71 billion.
Market breadth was broadly negative. Among 306 listed firms on HOSE, losers outweighed gainers by 192-61 and 53 stocks unchanged.
Eximbank (EIB) was the most active stock today with 1.77 million shares traded, closing down 4.83% to VND15,400.
Sacombank (STB), the second most active on a trade of 1.4 million units, tumbled 4.57% to settle at VND20,900.
Tan Tao Investment – Industry Corporation (ITA) dropped 4.94%, settling at VND7,700 with a trade of 1.33 million shares – the third most active.
On the Hanoi Stock Exchange, the HNX closed down 1.65 points or 2.63% to 61.04, the biggest drop since January 3. Trading volume eased to 32.37 million shares traded for VND267.3 billion.
Market breadth was broadly negative with 58 gainers, 202 losers and 38 flat issues.
VNDirect Securities (VND) was the most active position with 4.4 million shares changed hands, sank 5.26% to end at VND7,200.
PetroVietnam Construction (PVX) ranked second on a trade of 3.8 million units, fell 4.82% to close at VND7,900/share.
Saigon Hanoi Bank (SHB) came third with 2.6 million shares traded, closed down 5.2% to close at VND7,300/unit.
