The benchmark VN Index lost 0.55 point or 0.12% to 465.17. Volume fell steeply 37.7% to 66.4 million shares worth of VND1 trillion, lowest level in 3 weeks. Put-through trading contributed 6.2 million shares worth VND139.7 billion.
The market breadth was a bit negative on the primary bourse where 122 stocks advanced, 129 tumbled, 59 closed unchanged.
The VN30 Index also lost 0.14 point, or 0.03%, to 533.6.
The market opened in the green with 5 million shares changed hands as bargain hunters came back. The market went up quickly in the first 15 continuous trading session and hit the high at 9:30 before paring the gain as profit takers sold into the high. The trading pace was slow overall as both buyers and sellers were more cautious. Heat was still seen in some selective stocks but the broader market was more quite.
The afternoon session reopened with more selling pressure, sending the index to the negative ground.
Broker shares were mixed, SSI, HCM edged up while AGS, BSI lost, SBS fell to the floor with nearly 5 million shares queued at the offer side after the company posted heavy loss in Q1/2012.
Banking shares were weak CTG, STB and VCB fell, EIB and MBB stayed at the neutral line.
Property stocks were gainers in general, DIC, DIG, NTL, SJS, HAG, ITC were among gainers.
Rubber shares and mineral stocks were solid gainers.
Military Commercial Joint Stock Bank (MBB) was the most active stock with 3.4 million shares, closing at the flat line.
Sacom Development and Investment Corporation (SAM) came second with 2.4 million shares traded, resuming its ceiling performance today.
Vietnam Electricity Construction Joint Stock Corporation (VNE) took the third position with 2.2 million shares, limited up after earnings forecast released.
On the Hanoi Stock Exchange, the HNX index continued to buck trend to post a gain of 0.06 point or 0.08% to 77.81. Trading volume eased to 55.9 million shares worth VND611.2 billion.
The market breadth was negative on the northern exchange. Among index members, 122 rallied, 127 tumbled, 90 closed unmoved.
Hanoi Building Commercial Joint Stock Bank (HBB) was the top active player with 4.6 million shares changed hands, closing at the neutral line.
PetroVietnam Construction Joint Stock Corporation (PVX) came second with 4 million shares traded, closing 1 price line down and SCR took the third position with 3.6 million shares traded, closing up at the ceiling level.
